The First Line of Defense: Why Your Primary Care Provider is Essential During New England Winter

As the temperatures drop and the brutal New England winter settles into Leominster, the importance of having an established relationship with a Primary Care Provider (PCP) at Family Medical Center becomes more than just a convenience—it’s a vital safety net for your health.

While we are used to the snow and ice, the physiological stress of extreme cold, combined with peak sick season, creates unique health risks that require professional, personalized oversight.

           1. Managing the Winter Triple Threat

Winter in Massachusetts brings a surge in respiratory illnesses, often referred to as the Triple Threat: Flu, COVID-19, and RSV. Having a PCP at Family Medical means you aren't just a number in a crowded urgent care waiting room.

Your doctor knows your medical history, which allows them to:

Provide Early Intervention: Identifying symptoms before they escalate into pneumonia or severe bronchitis.

Coordinate Testing: Knowing when a cough is just a cold and when it requires specific diagnostic testing.

Manage Vaccinations: Ensuring you and your family are up-to-date on boosters and seasonal shots.

           2. Chronic Condition Management in the Cold

Extreme cold is a known trigger for several chronic health issues. For many in our community, the winter months lead to:

Cardiovascular Strain: Cold weather constricts blood vessels, which can increase blood pressure and put extra stress on the heart, especially during strenuous activities like shoveling.

Respiratory Triggers: For those with asthma or COPD, the dry, frigid air can trigger cold-induced attacks.

Joint Pain amp; Arthritis: Barometric pressure changes and cold temperatures often lead to increased stiffness and pain.

A dedicated provider at Family Medical can adjust your treatment plans seasonally, ensuring your medications are optimized for the winter environment.

           3. Mental Health and the Winter Blues

With the shorter days and reduced sunlight in New England, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a significant concern. It is often more than just feeling tired. Your PCP is trained to screen for signs of seasonal depression and can provide resources ranging from light therapy recommendations to behavioral health referrals right here in Leominster.

           4. Proactive Health: Beyond the Cold

At Family Medical, we believe in being proactive rather than reactive. This includes offering advanced screenings like MyRisk Hereditary Cancer Testing. Winter is often a time for reflection and planning for the year ahead—there is no better time to discuss your family history and genetic risks with a provider who can guide you through the results.

           Winter Wellness Checklist

To stay safe during the peak of the season, keep these tips in mind:

Layer Up: Use moisture-wicking base layers and wind-resistant outer shells to prevent hypothermia.

Hydrate: You can get dehydrated in the winter just as easily as in the summer.

Shovel Safely: If you have a history of heart trouble, always consult your Family Medical provider before tackling heavy snow.

Know the Signs: If you or a loved one experience uncontrollable shivering, slurred speech, or extreme exhaustion, seek medical attention immediately, as these are signs of hypothermia.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common disorders diagnosed in children. Symptoms begin in childhood and usually continue into teen years and adulthood. For many children with ADHD, symptoms can cause difficulty at home, school, or with friends and range from mildly disruptive to more severe. Early diagnosis may help guide parents in how to best support their child. Treatment may include behavioral therapy, medication management, or typically a combination of the two.

Family Medical offers screening for ADHD utilizing the Vanderbilt Diagnostic Rating (VADRS) for children aged 5-12 who attend school. If you have concerns and feel your child may benefit from this screening, please contact our office to schedule an initial consultation with one of our providers.

Breastfeeding offers many benefits to both mothers and babies but can sometimes be quite challenging in the beginning. A lactation consultant will educate and support women in various areas such as finding a comfortable feeding position, developing a strong latch, recognizing hunger cues, developing a feeding schedule, increasing or supporting your milk supply, and assisting with expressing milk either by hand or pump.

If you have questions or need additional support with your breastfeeding journey, Family Medical can help. Lauren Basque, FNP, is a certified lactation consultant and available for breastfeeding support. She will meet with you to answer questions and understand any areas of concern. Lauren will observe a feeding while providing hands-on support and direction, weigh your baby pre- and post-feed to determine milk transfer, and then develop a plan for managing feeding moving forward.

Testosterone levels peak in adolescence and early adulthood and can begin to slowly decline for men after age 40. This decline can be subtle with very few, if any, symptoms. In other men, the drop in testosterone may be more obvious with symptoms of reduced sexual desire, increased body weight with decreased muscle mass, fatigue, or even depression. For some men, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) may be an appropriate option.

If you have questions regarding your testosterone level and whether replacement therapy may be right for you, Family Medical can help. Dr. Justine Eaton will assess your testosterone level, and then together decide if TRT is right for you. If replacement therapy is appropriate, Dr. Eaton will work with you to develop a treatment regimen, then follow your levels and make adjustments as needed.

Perimenopause is the time when a woman’s body is getting ready to stop regular menstrual periods. The age of onset varies greatly, as does the severity of symptoms. These symptoms can range from mild to more severe and can be disruptive and distressing for women.

If you have questions regarding perimenopause and menopause, Family Medical can help. Dr. Justine Eaton and Amanda Molter, CNM, are available for consultation.

For some women, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be indicated. For others, treatment may focus more on symptom management with supportive medications or even a combination of both. Our providers can work with you to develop an individualized plan for support through this important stage of life.
